چکیده

We report on the results of an in depth investigation of the extended [O ii]λ3727 line-emission in 11 3CR radio galaxies (0.5 < z < 1.1). Using a FabryPerot etalon to obtain both the kinematics and morphology of the [O ii] gas, our goal was to find the mechanisms responsible for the creation and excitation of this warm gas, and the source of its alignment with the radio emission.

The large-scale distribution of warm ionized gas around nearby radio galaxies with jet-cloud interactions

Deep, narrow-band Hα observations taken with the TAURUS Tunable Filter (TTF) on the 4.2m WHT telescope are presented for two nearby radio galaxies with strong jet-cloud interactions. Although the brightest emission line components are closely aligned with the radio jets — providing nearby examples of the “alignment effect” most commonly observed in high redshift (z > 0.5) radio galaxies — lower...

Xray observations of high redshift radio galaxies

I summarize Xray properties of high redshift radio galaxies, beginning with a brief review of what has been learned from Xray observations of low redshift powerful radio galaxies (in particular, Cygnus A), and then turning to Chandra observations of four high redshift radio galaxies. Hot Xray emitting atmospheres of the type seen in low redshift clusters are not detected in the high redshift so...

Dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...

PKS 2250 - 41 and the rôle of jet - cloud interactions in powerful radio galaxies

We present high resolution, long-slit spectra of the jet-cloud interaction in the powerful southern radio galaxy PKS2250-41. We have resolved the emission lines into two main kinematic components: a broad component (FWHM≥900 km s) and a narrow component (FWHM≤150 km s). While the broad component is characterized by a low ionization level (with particularly weak HeIIλ4686 emission) and is spatia...

Is HCN a True Tracer of Dense Molecular Gas in LIRGs and ULIRGs?

We present the results of the first HCO survey probing the dense molecular gas content of a sample of 16 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). Previous work, based on HCN(1–0) observations, had shown that LIRGs and ULIRGs posses a significantly higher fraction of dense molecular gas compared to normal galaxies. While the picture issued from HCO partly confirms this re...
